A total of 6 fire engines were called to a car workshop in Plaistow on Saturday.
The Fire Service reported 20 calls which they took from worried residents are the fire swept through the workshop and made its way towards a block of shops and flats.
Station Manager Richard Wyatt said: “Seven people were evacuated by police from a nearby block of flats as a precaution due to gas cylinders on site, as some cylinders can explode when exposed to heat. The cylinders were removed safely and crews remained at the scene damping down after the fire was under control.”
Fire crews spends a total of 3 hours cooling down the blaze as it threatened to ignite a series of gas tanks and cylinders inside the workshop.
The cause of the fire is currently being investigated.
